Tips for Staying Healthy When You Have a Desk Job

January 27, 2025

Working from home has become the norm in the era of COVID-19, meaning that a lot of us are spending more time sitting down in front of a computer. It’s tempting to work through lunch breaks and forget about getting up to stretch, but it’s essential to take care of your health, especially if you’re not as active as you’d like to be. Here, we’ll outline some tips to stay healthy and productive, even with a desk job.

Take breaks throughout the day

It’s crucial to take frequent, short breaks throughout the day to stretch your legs and give your eyes a break. Standing up every hour and walking for five or ten minutes can make all the difference in your day. When you have a chance to take breaks, use it!

Pack a healthy lunch

It’s essential to pack healthy snacks and meals that are easy to eat at your desk. Instead of craving unhealthy snack items like chips or cookies, try packing veggies, fruits and a high protein lunch for yourself. Preparing a healthy lunch will limit the number of unhealthy foods you eat daily helping you stay healthy and avoid weight gain.

Invest in an ergonomic chair

Hunching over a laptop for hours on end can be detrimental to your posture. Investing in an ergonomic chair can make all the difference by encouraging proper posture, preventing back pain, and ultimately improving your productivity.

Find time to workout

It can be tough for some, but incorporating a physical workout in your daily routine can go a long way. Working out daily has numerous benefits such as decreasing stress, improving blood circulation, and improving overall performance. If you can’t make time for a full workout, try some light stretching exercises during a break or at lunchtime.

Give your eyes a break

Staring at screens all day can be tough on the eyes. To avoid harmful effects to the eyes, consistently giving your eyes some screen-free time is essential. Follow the 20/20/20 rule; every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds. This will help prevent eye strain.

Working a desk job doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your health. Keep these tips in mind to take care of your body and prevent the negative health effects of sitting for extended periods of time. Remember to take frequent breaks in your day, pack healthy food items, invest in an ergonomic chair, find time to exercise, and give your eyes a break! Your body will thank you for it.
