For decades, we have monitored the Australian influenza season as a good predictor of potential disease activity for the Northern hemisphere.
In the Southern hemisphere, influenza A(H3N2) has been the dominant virus this season. While it is still too early to tell what will be prevalent in the Northern hemisphere, experts are expecting influenza A(H1N1) and B viruses to also be active this season. Additionally, they are warning of newly emerging strains that could potentially cause illness. It is important to be aware of the various strains circulating, and to take proper precautions in order to protect yourself and those around you from infection.
Vaccination is the most effective way to help protect against influenza, reducing the risk of illness and potential hospitalization.
Stay informed about the current disease situation by keeping up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government sources. They can provide valuable information on how to best protect yourself and those around you from the flu. The elderly, very young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting serious illnesses from influenza. It’s important to be aware of the populations most at risk for illness and take extra precautions in order to reduce their exposure to the virus.
Be sure to plan accordingly and stock up on vaccines and supplies, such as masks, gloves, and other protective equipment in the event of an influenza outbreak. Also consider educating your staff and those around you on proper handwashing techniques, as well as, how to reduce exposure to germs through social distancing.
Consult with your healthcare provider about immunization against influenza and, if need be, should anyone in your family experience symptoms of the flu. Don’t hesitate to seek medical advice as soon as possible, in order to get the best care for yourself and those around you.
Remember: no matter what comes our way during the 2023 influenza season, remaining informed and taking preventive measures will help you prepare for whatever may come.
